The purpose of the Agis programme was to provide European citizens with a high level of protection in an area of freedom, security and justice.
- To develop, implement and evaluate European policies in this field.
- To promote and strengthen networking, mutual co-operation on general subjects of common interest to the Member States, the exchange and dissemination of information, experience and best practices, local and regional co-operation and the improvement and adaptation of training and technical and scientific research.
- To encourage Member States to step up co-operation with the applicant countries, other third countries and appropriate regional and international organisations.

Attention: The AGIS programme is now closed.
Although originally intended to run until 2007, AGIS ended a year early in 2006 so that it could be succeeded by new programmes in the area of internal security and criminal justice. These programmes are due to run over the period 2007-2013:
- Under the framework programme "Security and Safeguarding Liberties", the new specific programmes "Prevention, Preparedness and Consequence Management of Terrorism and Other Security-Related Risks" and "Prevention of and Fight Against Crime";
- Under the framework programme "Fundamental Rights and Justice", the new specific programme "Criminal Justice".
These programmes were adopted by the Council on 12 February 2007 and published on 24 February 2007 in the Official Journal of the European Union, no. L 58. Details of the funding opportunities available under them will be posted on the pages of the specific programmes.
