The Conference "Child Safety on the Internet – Prevention, Education and Cooperation” was held in Moscow on the 12 - 13 of November

In Russia, Europe and the world, Internet use is rapidly growing. Children and young people quickly adapt to using Information and Communication technologies in their daily lives as a tool both for learning and for fun. They use it in their own house, in friends' houses, in schools, in libraries and at cybercaf¬es to mention only a few of the places where you have access. Although the Internet is being used in a positive way by most children in Europe, risks exist, associated with encountering potentially harmful material online, being bullied or harassed by other children or being contacted by persons with a sexual interest in children (grooming). The Internet is also being used for producing, distributing and storing images and films of sexual abuse of children. The conference brought  together 150 researchers, law enforcement, policy makers, child protection professionals, experts and NGO representatives from Russia, other Baltic Sea Region countries and the EU Member States to exchange knowledge and experiences and suggest ways to deal with the challenges related to keeping children safe on the Internet and keeping the Internet free from child abusive material. The two conference  topics: "Child sexual abuse online - Reduction of Harm through international cooperation" and "Promoting a safer use of online technologies by children - Educational programmes, awareness raising and information" were elaborated in four plenary sessions and nine seminars, all in all around 55 interventions and presentations were made. The conference, organised by the Expert Group for Cooperation on Children at Risk within the Council of the Baltic Sea States in cooperation with the European Commission's Safer Internet Programme gave input to further and closer cooperation between Russian experts and EU experts.
